It’s never too young to show off your talent, right? 15-year-old Alice Sungurov certainly thinks so. In her new song “Broke My Heart”, Alice Sungurov delivers a soft pop ballad about young love in the high school years.
The production of “Broke My Heart” is clean. You can hear every instrument song’s flow is lively. The song also offers a fun chorus twist by double-timing the drum beat and bass to add some additional energy. Additionally Alice Sungurov’s voice is impressive as she can fearlessly hold both notes and zeal.
Even though the sound quality and skill is all there, I had a difficult time getting hooked onto this song. Even though the track sounds fine in recording quality, I felt as if it was holding back and playing it safe. This is completely understandable for someone starting off a music career, but it’s also something you should try and shake off quickly. For example, the repeating “tick-tock, he broke my heart” and leading into a giggle fit at 2:54-3:17 felt more like a Disney pop song formula. For this section specifically, I think Alice Sungurov can make better use of her quirkiness.
Alice Sungurov is a young artist who has limitless potential. Carrying a strong voice at such a young age and having the guts to write and record music is impressive on its own. If Alice is simply making music for fun, then she should ignore any of this feedback. However, if she wants to improve, practicing and writing new songs will help her break out of the standard mold. Alice has come this far with her audacity to make songs, but I want her to use that same courage to reach for something unique and interesting. She has the talent.
