Out of the woodwork caught between space and a soft place comes Lost Angeles project Big Black Delta, whose song “Side of the Road” is a sublime stroll through melodic bass lines, loud and distorted beats, and moving synth textures. Creator Jonathan Bates of M83 touring fame appears to take a nod or two from the shoegaze-tinged electro act, implementing the fuzzy distortion of the genre with hard-hitting electro-dance and a taste of 80s new wave.
The exotic flair of the vocals brings Heaven down to an earthy level, with gorgeous unisons of falsettos that swoon like a summertime choir. The ambiance swirls and drones like a flight through cloudy skies in the haze of the morning. Bates mentioned that he wanted to make a song that sounded what he thought “flying and forgiveness would sound like,” as well as “distorted, melodic, spacey, and just a lot of fun to dance to and listen on repeat all day long.” And the goal has been tackled with flying colors of soaring, transcendent serenity.
“Side of the Road” is danceable enough for the clubs, airy enough for a shoegaze daydream, and vocally acrobatic enough to make the most experienced opera coach blush. What is found on this side of the road is a lot more interesting than what can be found on the other. Can a full-length release of this stuff come out anytime soon?
