Cash Rules Everything Around Me (C.R.E.A.M) as retold by “Ensemble Mik Nawooj” brings an old message to new light with a refreshing composition.
This particular group, known as Ensemble Mik Nawooj, is led by classically trained composer/pianist JooWan Kim, who incorporates elements from hip-hop & classical music to create a new mesh of good music. This particular genre has been labeled as “Hybrid Music”.
Like the original Wu C.R.E.A.M track, the song is based on a journey from struggling to overcoming, and for those still struggling, the message is about maintaining and just making it through. Everyone knows that money in general is one of the most influential substances in the world and this concept is openly shared among all people in all parts of the world.
C.R.E.A.M was a bold move on for Kim. Attempting to “re-brand” a hip-hop classic has to be taken with extreme caution. If you hit it on the nose, you are a knight in shining armor. If you miss it, then everything goes dark until the next greatness emerges. In my personal opinion, the remake was a success, partly because it kept the primary elements in tact. You have fresh lyrics, the original chorus, an energy driven beat-scape, a light classical flair that complements the drum line and a message that supports and embraces the the original Wu-banger classic.
Hip Hop artists are very in tune with embracing concepts and sounds from other genres, but hip hop doesn’t always fit well in within other genres. Many times it will sound forced or just not hip-hop. Hip-Hop and classical music in their own space only reach so far. The bridge that this particular remake builds will bring awareness to the classical and produce many cross-over fans that will likely gravitate towards and accept and future projects present by Kim and Golden Fetus Records. We’ve seen many artists and singers utilize live bands, but how often do you see hip hop artists perform with a live orchestra and professional opera singers.
In general, the track is great and I’m sure Method Man and the entire Wu clan are digging the rendition. The only drawback for me was the mix after the 2:00 min mark; Both emcees seemed to be overpowered by the soundtrack and I found myself working harder to hear the lyrics. Other than that, the composition is fresh!
