In a sultry and funky groove comes “Got that Hunger, the third single by Scribbling Idiots off their upcoming album Invitation Only. With a touch of blues fusion the muffled emotion of “Got that Hunger”’s backing band evokes the soul bands of the 60s and 70s. It’s an organ-led rocker with wailing female vocals.
KJ-52, Theory Hazit, JustMe, and EF Cuttin are the stars of the show. They inject a face full of hip-hop attitude—authoritative, laid back, and lurking all at once. At breakneck speed each vocalist lays down their rhythms and rhymes with brashness, speaking out against the listener and themselves. The repetitive backing track is cut in with boastful expressions, smarmy rap jargon, and trip-hop disc scratching.
Five years in the business, the group that took inspiration from the “scribbler of books” Mark Twain himself have backed up their deprecating name with scribbles and rhymes that avoid mainstream clichés and capture a special spirit of underground hip-hop. And while it would have been exciting to hear just a bit more variation in the “Got that Hunger” backing track, all the heart and defiance that Scribbling Idiots carry themselves with is still intact.
The beat is another Theory Hazit classic and maintains the perfect balance of energy and “cutting-edge-ness”. Definitely diggin the organ samples chopped in there to give it that subliminal backing of a preacher dishing out the word. The organ hook is irresistible and fully relevant.
ILLECT Recordings is like the non-secular version of Stones Throw Records… A fresh line-up hip hop of artists on a exploration to push music to it’s limits while staying true to it’s heart!
“Invitation Only” is available digitally and also in hard copy formats. A mixtape version of the album, mixed by DJ Aslan, will be available on limited edition cassette tape.
Scribbling Idiots “Invitation Only” releases March 11, 2014.
